Carbon Emissions Management Division

OVERVIEW

Carbon emissions management is a potentially significant growth area for both current and future ICAC members. The most significant variable on the horizon is the level of government support and market demand.

The markets include technologies in CO2:

  • capture
  • conversion
  • sequestration
  • utilization

The enabling technologies that connect carbon technologies and efficiency improvements also present potential market opportunities.

Near-term: There is a need for government support for RD&D to attract private sector investment

Mid-term: There is a need for government to leverage U.S. technology & policy leadership to create international market demand for carbon management technologies

OBJECTIVE

Support adoption of government policies that create clear, stable market conditions that will dependably reward private sector investment in RD&D for carbon management technologies.

STRATEGY

Build support in government, based on the benefits of securing global leadership in a technology-set that will be critical to success in the effort to address climate change.

  • Educate policymakers re: the need for carbon management technologies even in high-renewable deployment scenarios
  • Propose and promote adoption of incentives & programs that will attract investment in promising technologies
  • Collaborate with both regulated sector organizations and environmental organizations to increase likelihood of success for advocacy efforts
  • Maintain technology neutrality with regard to various carbon emissions management technology options – as with all ICAC programs, our work should support creation of market opportunities & allow ICAC members to compete for business in those markets
