Project Demonstrates Carbon Capture and Utilization Solution for Cement and Concrete Industries

A team of five companies led by CarbonCure Technologies has demonstrated the world’s first integrated CO2 capture and utilization from a cement plant kiln for subsequent use in concrete production. The project took place at the Argos Roberta cement plant near Calera, Alabama.

CO2 was captured using Sustainable Energy Solutions cryogenic CO2 capture technology. The CO2 was then transported by Praxair for reuse at Argos’ Glenwood concrete operations in Atlanta, Georgia, which were equipped with CarbonCure’s CO2 utilization technology. The concrete manufactured with the waste CO2 was then used in a local construction project in the greater Atlanta area. Kline Consulting oversaw the commissioning and reporting of the industrial demonstration.

The project was an extension of Team CarbonCure’s participation in the US$20 million NRG COSIA Carbon XPRIZE Challenge, which aims to incentivize the development of integrated carbon capture and utilization (CCU) technologies. Although the Carbon XPRIZE Challenge focuses on CO2 from coal and natural gas power plants, Team CarbonCure made the decision to demonstrate the potential of its technology in the cement sector, which is expected to be both the earliest and largest market for CCU technologies.
